2021 New Moving Tendencies

Updated: Jul 7, 2021

Last year, beginning in 2020, a pandemic was declared by the World’s Health Organization. The mandatory measures: lockdown, social distance, public restrictions. This surprisingly triggered different changes in human behaviors. Now, there is a huge demand nationwide for moving services. The 2020 U.S Moving Migration details the states having more inbound moving and outbound moves. Moving companies in Maryland have experienced a huge demand for moving services, with 60% of outbound moving.

What are some of the motivations to move?

The states from the northern east coast are moving to look for better climate conditions and cost of living. Cities like New York and Washington have experienced an outbound migration. The lockdown in New York obligated most of the companies to send their employees to work from home. With this behavior change, people began consciously understanding the implications of working and being at home during the long lockdowns. Many citizens started to feel deprived, lost quality of life and freedom, by living and working in the same place, while paying expensive rents. Due to these limitations, they found out that the cost of living outside in the county areas, plus the quality of life was superior to living in the city. A moving and migrating phenomenon started. Residents started looking for bigger spaces on the outskirts of the city, the prices of houses started to increase, and more moving services in New York were demanded.

Another behavior that became a new tendency was office moving. Some businesses had to reduce their space or their economies. Especially now in 2021, big corporations feel comfortable with employees working from home, and it has been more beneficial in terms of costs and time. Many offices have been closed, others have reduced their spaces and have reevaluated their ways of operating.

Moving and living in Washington D.C.

Washington is a perfect example to explain outbound and inbound moving tendencies. Washington D.C. is a city of politicians, ambassadors, lawyers, and qualified, talented individuals. The city is attractive and famous for its architecture, culture, gastronomy, museums, parks, and architecture. It is one of the main cities in the United States and it offers plenty of labor opportunities, universities, and cultural activities.

The pandemic motivated many citizens to rethink their lifestyle and quality of life. People moved to the main suburbs of Washington D.C. like Gaithersburg, Arlington, Bethesda, and Herndon. They are looking for better alternatives to their current lifestyles.

Based on the 2020-2021 American Migration Report:

  • “21% more people plan to move in 2021 than moved in 2020.

  • We thought that was because people wanted to move to safer places during the COVID-19 pandemic; we found that more people were moving for reasons like lowering their living costs and taking advantage of newfound job flexibility.

  • Homeownership is on the rise, and 40% of movers are relocated from large cities to smaller communities where they can own bigger homes or larger pieces of land.

  • More than 70% of movers say they’re excited to get to know their new neighbors — once it’s safe to do so, of course.” (2020-2021 American Migration Report)

Based on a survey completed, most of the people moving in 2021 have moved to lower their cost of living and to be closer to their family.

Considering the moving company in Maryland: Allen and Son Moving and Storage, they have experienced moving people who were leaving Maryland to change their lifestyle for better weather conditions or to retire. A lot of moving services were demanded from citizens to move to Washington D.C. for job opportunities.

The company Allen and Son, a recognized Baltimore moving company, discovered the moving boom and the amount of population moving to Florida. There are many reasons why the state of Florida is attractive to move, for example, cheaper cost of living, lower tax burdens, cheaper labor, and better weather conditions. There is a huge tendency of the population moving to Florida to retire. Now the company’s goal is to open this new market and be recognized among Florida’s best movers.
